Surveys of Undergraduate Students

Cornell has used four survey instruments to learn about the experiences of currently enrolled undergraduate students.

The most recent of these, the Cornell PULSE (Perceptions of Undergraduate Life and Student Experiences) Survey, asks students about their involvement in various academic and extracurricular activities, their interactions with faculty and students, and their perceptions of their undergraduate experience. This web-based survey was administered for the first time in February 2009.

The Enrolled Student Survey (ESS) was created by Cornell and a research consortium of other private, selective institutions. Like the PULSE, the ESS asks students about their academic and co-curricular engagement. This web-based survey was first administered at Cornell in Spring 2003 and has been repeated every other year.

The College Student Experiences Questionnaire (CSEQ) was administered via the web in Spring 2001 to the freshman and sophomore classes at Cornell.

The Cycles Survey was administered via the web in Spring 1999 to the freshman and sophomore classes at Cornell.
